Wi-Fi 6 has become a modern word of mouth! Besides recognizing that the 802.11ax standard is the sixth generation of WiFi, we have little knowledge of this technology. Wi-Fi 6 is a recent Wi-Fi Alliance branding conference, a non-profit organization that promotes Wi-Fi software and certifies Wi-Fi devices in accordance with certain interoperability requirements. The new branding is known as the faster version of the Wi-Fi system that we have been using for over a decade.

The organization came up with the convention as it was difficult to remember the earlier names (the real name was 802.11ax). Also known as Wi-Fi 5, the Wi-Fi currently in use, 802.11ac, supports a speed of up to 3.5 Gbps. Wi-Fi 6 supports 9.6 Gbps, more than doubling your Wi-Fi 5 3.5 Gbps.

Wi-Fi’s ubiquity and its ability to complement other wireless technologies such as Artificial Intelligence is slowly translating into reality the vision of connecting everyone and everything. Simultaneously, Wi-Fi’s growth has generated very varied and densely populated Wi-Fi settings. This calls for new advances in technology to meet users ‘ needs. Wi-Fi 6 claims it has answers to this because it will be able to enable Wi-Fi devices to operate efficiently in the densest and most complex networking settings. In addition to reliable communication and speed, users in most challenging Wi-Fi environments need stable performance. Wi-Fi 6 guarantees that this will be handled.

The reason why Wi-Fi 6 is considered to be the idle alternative to build the Internet of Things is because it promotes the technology of TWT (Target Wakeup Time). The technology allows users to decide how many times they can be allowed to send or receive data, which in turn allows access points for 802.11ax (WiFi 6) to effectively increase the sleep time of the network and dramatically save battery life. This idea remains a key feature in IoT development. Target Wake Time also enables wireless access points and phones to negotiate and identify specific times for accessing the medium.
This optimizes multiple spectral efficiency and reduces user-specific contention and overlap.
How Wi-Fi 6 Works
Wi-Fi 6 mainly uses two MU-MIMO and OFDMA technologies.
- MU-MIMO is’ multi-user, multi-input, multi-output.’ Routers and endpoint tools support it. The technology is used to increase the number of antennas on a wireless router that is used to receive and transmit, improving wireless communication efficiency.
- OFDMA–It stands for’ Multiple Access Orthogonal Frequency Division’ and as the name suggests, the technology allows one AP to link to multiple clients with specific bandwidth requirements simultaneously.

We are already seeing a demand for increased capacity and velocities of throughput. This will continue to grow as consumers continue to add more wireless devices to each network and expect faster response times for their operations (streaming favorite videos or uploading large files) As such, switching to WiFi 6 or 802.11ax technology that aims to satisfy all of our demands would appear to be the most viable option.
